I work for one of the largest corporations in the world (think chocolate) on some of the most modern and highly automated machinery and robotics systems used both in production and material handling. My job is to troubleshoot and repair the automated systems and robotics. Let me tell you, they work in a very controlled environment and they screw up all the time. You wouldn't believe the amount of candy bars the end up going into the cattle feed bins due to the robotics messing up. We even have one robot that puts the crunchy things in your chocolate bar that was supposed to have replaced three human beings doing it by hand, but seems to require three human beings to constantly monitor it. not to mention it produces five times the amount of defects and waste compared to when it was done by human beings by hand. If you've ever worked with automation and robotics, you will know that what is delivered falls far short of all the promises of when they are sold. On the bright side, I am sure there are a lot of cows and pigs in the area they're very happy to be eating the tractor trailer load of candy bars that hit the floor every day in our plant when the robots screw up

Van companies need to design an efficient and effective skateboard then it won’t matter what box they put on it. If designed right then recycling the skateboard after accidents improves the utility of the system. Building on the model x was probably just an off the top remark and shouldn’t be taken too seriously he was probably just talking about suspension geometry and power plant… low distance vans still need reasonable range as nobody wants to waste their day worrying between charge stations … 100 to 200 seems reasonable for a low distance delivery vehicle less is scary . Remember reserve power is not the same in an EV as fuel options in an Ice car . If you could call a roadside quick charge supplier you might have something …

A vehicle company partnering with Microsoft? You gotta be kidding! I can see MS insisting on running their OS and Vans on the side of the road with the Blue Screen of death or a please connect to the Internet to download the latest patch to get you going again … either that or the smarter company insisting on a version of Linux ….

See the ability to build a prototype and throw some video out has proven to be easy. Mass production of these vehicles hasn't even been put to a practical test. This is a a$$ backwards way of thinking and the end result will be marginal at best. For success they need to start with the ability to produce the fleets that will make such a venture possible. They can build a box but will it actually be practical? Right now I think it is a pipe dream. Production first, then engineering next.

the whole micro cell thing really sounds to me like the dot com bubble back in the 90's. all kinds of online companies claimed they can beat brick and mortar by just drop shipping. well they all found out that was bullshit. even amazon has physical warehouses and alot of them. so i am totally unconvinced you can build a vehicle in a small space and make money at it. vehicles need thousands of parts . so maybe you make sub assemblies and ship them around but that's not cheaper.

So Arrival claims to have made production easy? That’s a big claim. How can a micro factory have economies of scale? -- Doesn’t TBC/Tesla have to have a fully autonomous vehicle in the LVCC loop by December? I'm just hoping Tesla develops a Sprinter van competitor that can be used for off-road camping. I suspect that based on how behind they are on their current offerings & announced vehicles, that I shouldn't expect it in the next 3 years which is when I plan to replace my 2021 Model Y. Also... I see all these companies out there announcing upcoming EV's, but never talk about how they plan to charge them. Electrify America isn't going to be able to support all these cars/trucks/vans. That's the main reason I won't look at another EV currently besides Tesla. The Supercharger network is so far ahead of its competitors.

"Low-cost micro-factories" ... that's just a fancy way of saying that you'll be building separate components in different specialized factories and then shipping those components to one location where they will be assembled into the final product. Then, you'll likely end up outsourcing this components manufacturing to suppliers who do the work in their own "micro-factories" much more efficiently than your own unionized autoworkers can ... basically what Big Auto is doing now with their ICE cars. So, Arrival isn't exactly on to anything new here.

The battery shortage is vexing. CATL and another will be making 4680 "sized" cells to help Tesla out (probably the cheap Iron phosphate ones), but I can't seem to figure out why LG and others haven't also switched into making larger cells for industrial electronics. Why not pouches? Because we have more than a century of cell production experience, and it's easier and more universal in use case scenarios than a pouch. We need so many batteries for every manufacturer, it's ridiculous that the big companies haven't stepped it up significantly more than they have...

When I see so many buzz words in a text.. I immediately think -This was written to get politicians or institutions on the hook. People who spends someone else's money. But whatever happens, the money goes mainly to creative and energetic smart people, so failure isn't all bad. I hope they make it. You are a treat to listen to. Your English is so clear and easy to understand.

Could it do 120 miles at 120mph... this could replace HS2 in the UK for London to Birmingham Turn the route into a toll road for electric vehicles and autonomous electric taxis.. no schedules, no waiting, do when you want and serve towns in between. Turn a white elephant into a world beating system. Get to 220 miles at 150 mph and you can serve Manchester from London.

I could see arrival finishing their vision only robopilot for a low speed and clearly marked boundaries before tesla releases their vision only general intelligence full self driving. If I'm right the FUD will come fast and furious

@Nivek4g I agree a controlled environment is hard(arrival) and an uncontrolled environment is almost impossible (tesla). Even though they will both be using vision only, they are in different leagues

Tesla should offer EV production as a service. Build highly flexible factories focused on producing low volume ( tens of thousands per year) EV production runs.

There really isn't one, even 25k USD will not be affordable for many, especially with higher prices in many markets

It seems to me that Arrival are trying to move forward on too many fronts. All of the vehicles are needed, but they're competing with companies that have much bigger budgets. That's going to make profitability very difficult.

Also, I think their micro-factory concept is just that -- a concept, that has little bearing on how to manufacture vehicles profitably at any scale at all.

It is great to see the EV market advancing and providing niche products for industry. The fact that Tesla is not trying to crush its competition is a testament to their adherence of truly making a difference for our world. Kudos to all.

We now know that the plan to build a van on the chassis of model X is dead. It's because the chassis of the model X is going to be changed in the near future together with the advent of the structural battery. I think it's safe to forget about that Elon tweet it at least not treat it as a declaration of something they are currently working on.
