You need maximum range in order to be able to use your heat and a/c when and how you want to without it affecting, umm, your range lol

  • Michael Elliott
    Michael ElliottMånad sedan

IMHO, the place where extended range is important are vehicles that are used to tow (Model X, CyberTruck), since actual mileage is dramatically impacted when you're towing something. We all WANT to have a car that can go 600 miles on a single charge - but the number of people who NEED to have that probably doesn't warrant the increased production cost. Tesla is running a business - and if they produce a car with an increased range, but the cost to manufacturer (and thus higher price) to deliver that increased range means significantly fewer people will buy it, that's just a bad business decision.

This argument of "nobody needs 500miles range", is so dumb by Musk, when he and everyone else knows that you never get even close to those numbers in the real world. When i went for a 500miles/~820km road trip with a S70D over 2 days (to and back) i needed to charge 3 times from below 10% and i needed to slow down intentionally for several hundred kilometers to even reach the next supercharger. The problem is not that nobody needs 500 miles, the problem is that these cars regularly reach 30% less range than advertised. A car like the model S is supposedly built for fast comfortable driving on highways, where you can easily go 180-210km/h (112-130mph), but for this exact use case it falls short even more, reaching closer to 50% of the advertised range. There a "sticker-range" of 500 miles being 250 real world miles would actually make a difference.

Typical of Tesla marketing. The + cancelling will drive up Plaid demand and after a year or so there will be a Plaid "PLR" for long range, four motors, bla bla, etc. for another premium price point. Obviously I'm exaggerating a bit, but extra range has always been a option on Teslas and Plaid will be the same!

Big brother as insurance. Dumbest thing ever. I have low insurance rates because I do not wreck get tickets or commit driving infractions. That shows up as results. I do sometimes drive like a maniac but I know I am in a safe area or doing it in a safe way. The app won't know context. Tesla is big brother with under ranged cars and more hype than you can shake a stick at.

  • Matthew Huszarik
    Matthew HuszarikMånad sedan

400 miles only give you an effective range of 240 miles at 20%-80% so if you are using AC or heat as most of the time you are, that is even less. So Musks claim that no one need more than 400 miles range is just so much BS.

  • Matthew Huszarik

Sorry Ryan, I'm going to flag a foul here. I don't need someone monitoring my driving 24/7 which includes average speed. Regardless if "The Industry Seems to be going in this direction" comment you mentioned multiple times, I am not willing to give up my freedom to try my 3.2 0-60 time as many times as I choose. We can't all drive like senior citizens (I'm 59 and not far from that designation). In addition, you have touted many times, the 0-60 times of Model S. Seriously, 0-60 in under 2 seconds? And what will that do to your insurance premiums when you wish to use that capability when you are monitored. What you don't understand is all of the data that will be monitored for your insurance rates. For instance, having the acceleration capabilities can assist you in avoiding an accident by taking yourself out of trouble, but the insurance industry uses such information to raise your rates when you decide to use your right to accelerate quickly. Put that as food for thought! As of right now, there is no requirement to allow yourself to be monitored electronically in order to receive a reasonable insurance rate. I understand that the black box could be searched for conditions that existed when an accident occurs, but if I have an accident, I'll deal with that at that time and I'm positive it won't be from me driving over 65. I'll enjoy my reasonable accident free insurance driving rates and Model 3 Performance capabilities without a direct link to my insurance.

Tesla is very well placed to check how long people drive without stopping and how long they stop with all the data they're logging. they could very well make recommandations for their customers. your lease is ending in x months . we measured that the Tesla model * **** range is the best match for you. on your daily commute you'll be able to drive * days without charging. on road trips you'll be able to make ** % less stops and reduce Houston's by ** % thanks to faster charging. you could even install Tesla app when driving your ICE car and simulate which version would best match your driving habits..

Probably the 'Plaid' car had reached a weight where adding batteries didn't add acceleration. If 400 mile range electric cars could actually go that far, no-one would pay a lot for 500 miles, and if there were superchargers everywhere there's a gas station, 250 mile range is fine. For summer.

  • ViperGuy Dodge

I think the real reason was because the regular Plaid suffered the "Osborne Effect", and this was Elon's attempt to fix that. I am upset by this because I gave them $1000 to be on the list since last year. That 520+ mile range was a big selling point for me. First world problems.

It is Horses for Courses. If you don't need/want/appreciate the performance then you don't buy a Plaid, you buy a standard long range model. Every marque needs a premium "top of the range" model. The Plaid is the ultimate Tesla but is not for everyone and clearly you are one of them.

Hoping Lucid's claims on range is true, and that they keep pushing the tech. If they can make a solid and affordable 500, that'd convinced me as it's better than my gas car at ~330 miles (and the extra mileage for future battery degradation will help reduce range anxiety for the need to travel to find specific charging stations)

  • tb129tlh

400 miles (which will probably be 270 to 320) with normal 75-80mph driving is not enough when you your destination is supercharger desert ie: Tallahassee Pensacola and back. There is no Super charger in Pensacola. I am interested in going to there, taking care of business and going back home without driving out of my west to Mobile, AL to supercharge. 1772 is 50KWH (slow because I am spoiled on Tesla SC), and we still don't have CCS charger adapters in the US.

Hey Ryan. Thanks for all the info. Was speaking to someone recently and he heard that 6 out of 10 EVs purchased in Cali were being returned for ICE vehicles. Do you know if any of this is true?

@Sheldog 007 a study in Europe stated 2 of 5 EV owners went back to ICE. Mostly because of range and charging issues.

There is a study out of California that over 80% of BEV owners say they will buy another one. I know a lot of ICE car owners like to make up statistics.

don't give a crap about speed of the car, all i care about is Range. More Range = less charging, more room to have AC , heat , music on etc, what about Hills, batteries slowly wearing out, more range bigger batteries give more breathing room especially long term use, this is a HUGE mistake.

  • Joshua Wyatt

Obviously they can't achieve the range that they claimed. It will be one of the many broken promises. Preorders tell us that people do want it. When companies say people want something different than what customers are buying there is always an ulterior motive

For sure, with a supercharger network being so big, they have to make profir with it, so there’s no logic in making a super range car..

I think that Tesla has lost the plot, they've backed itself into a corner by announcing horrendously powerful machines & I seriously hope that they cut the Plaid+ & Roadster The Roadster's gorgeous, but shouldn't be allowed on public roads. The jet propulsion & hover modes proposed projects depart radically from Tesla's admirable advances in road safety. Huge fan of their proposed insurance model, drive like an idiot, you pay more. If you cause a fatality by being irresponsible, you will be liable for all costs & not covered. Rant over.

I believe paying "more for insurance" is not the actual plan of Elon and Tesla team. The aggressive drivers will be charged around the same as normal insurance and the more "calm" and responsible drivers will be charged significantly less. I am excited for the event to find out more!

ABS "events" only occur if a dangerous situation presents itself. The driver of the car in many cases is reacting to a random situation that another driver or drivers create. So, let's raise your rates if someone pulls out in front of you. Great, the bad driver is let off the hook, the good driver is penalized for not having an accident. @#$%ing corporate deciders.

i like my current insurance. i pay i get insurance. i dont get in any crashes or get tickets my price does not change. having it change MONTHLY by UP TO 50% based on not ACTUAL crashes or tickets assigned, but merely "data" DOES NOT INTEREST ME AT ALL. i dont want 2be spied on by my own car! im beyond frustrated with elon's lies by now: -"FSD is basically done, we're just waiting on regulatory approval which should be done by eoy2016" FSD still does not exist. -"taking the tunnel will be like a wormhole" "you will be going 130mph in the tunnel" "actual speed in tunnels is 30mph, but now there's RGB seizure lights" i would want a higher range vehicle so i dont have to charge as often, idc how many super chargers there are or how efficient home charging gets. i just want to NOT NEED to charge as often. this is the point of 500+ range for some ppl. not "how far do i need to go in one trip"

@netsrac cjf You don't get it. The Plaid+ will make 0-60 under 2s, so as the Roadster . Additionally, the Plaid+ will have 520+ miles of range, whereas the Roadster will have around 600 miles. Comparatively, Plaid+ will be so good to the point where it makes no sense to make the Roadster
